empire village
Empire Village Shopping Centre takes its name from the location’s long history. Home to the original athletes mess hall during the 1962 Commonwealth Games, the village experienced a devastating fire in 2014. Transform was hired to carefully restore and significantly update the 2,000sqm centre. The scope of works included one massive supermarket and over 10 specialty shops. The design process focused on community consultation and a desire to return a hub to the suburb, plus re-engage a new audience. Located in City Beach, Empire Village now boasts a new class of premium retailers and businesses, anchored by a 1,200sqm 24-hour fresh food-focused IGA developed by one of Australia’s premier independent supermarket operators.
Undergoing the large scale renovation has activated the centre into a dining destination and community hub. Significant works were undertaken to expand the shopping precinct accommodating the rise in patrons as well as the integration of design elements and fixtures that reference the site’s legacy within WA sporting folk law. The entry statements and associated signage elements take design cues from interpretation of the site’s history, signifying a welcome to the newly refurbished centre. Complementary illuminated retail signage integrates with the entry statements and the surrounding architecture and environment to form a unique identity for each retailer. Empire Village is now an example of the changing face of retail development, positioning it for future success while referencing the historical significance of the site
“A strong focus on delivering quality both in design and function for the development that directly responds to the aspirations of customers, the community and owners alike.”
